EWGA Goes to Dinner & Theater @ the Barksdale

EWGA was well represented at the August 9 production of "The Odd Couple". We had a small group that attended - Carrie, Nancy & Pat, but each one thoroughly enjoyed the event. We had a scrumptious dinner at historic Michele's Tavern & then saw the play. The acting was great, lots of funny lines & amusing situations! The understudy who took Felix Unger's role did an outstanding job and was certainly a hit with the audience. For those of you who enjoy local theater or just want to have some fun with fellow EWGA members, come out & join us for the next social event!

2007 GOLF CLINICS FOR WOMEN

 Golf Education
Carre and Linda at Pebble Beach

EWGA has developed a series of education programs aimed at helping our members achieve their goals in golf. This program consists of instructor lead clinics delivered at the local Chapter level. The instructor lead clinics fall into three categories that align with the player's  current playing level and goals. Clinics currently being offered are:
  • Getting Started
  • Breaking 100
  • How Low Can You Go

GETTING STARTED

The Getting Started clinic provides all the basics to help a new golfer become comfortable playing with other people on the golf course. The first part of the clinic covers all of the basics of golf. Participants are introduced to the terminology, basic rules and etiquette of the game. They also practice the shots and techniques required to play the game in a learning environment, typically on a driving range or practice facility.
The second part of the clinic provides the chance to get out on the course in a learning environment, so the new golfer becomes comfortable with the etiquette of the game, and knowing how to get around the golf course. At the end of the clinic, many new golfers are comfortable enough to sign up for the Chapter golf league or new golfer events.
Whether you are playing for work or pleasure, we will get your game started on the right swing. Please sign up early, space will be limited. The student-teacher ratio will be 6:1. If you have to miss a class it can be made up in other classes. Classes 1-4 will be one hour and the final class will be 2 hours with golf course instruction.

Registration: Contact Janet Phillips at (804) 794-0010

Cost: $150 for members; $175 for non-members. Payment due upon registration. (Fee includes range balls, club rental, 2 free rounds of golf at Windy Hill and coupons for merchandise & practice range.

Dear Kimberly

Wow! It's been a HOT summer,  And it sure has flown by! I hope you have had lots of time on the golf course. I sure have! Even though we had year-round golf when I lived out West, I don't think I played as much golf as I did this summer. It's been great!

Did you participate in any of the fantastic events the Greater Richmond EWGA Chapter sponsored? Hopefully you did. The Events Committee has some wonderful fun events planned in the next few months. And, watch for fun things to do this Winter.

I had the good fortune to play in our Chapter Championship and WON my flight. It was a great honor to represent the Greater Richmond Chapter at the EWGA Sectionals. Sadly, I did not win my flight, but one of our own went to Nationals this year. Congratulations to Laura Posey! Read on for details.

I hope you have a great Fall, and let's hope for good weather for a few more months, so we can get more rounds in. See you on the course!

Laura Posey takes Low Net in First Division of Sectional Championship!

The winners of the Richmond Championship played in the Chesapeake Semi Final Championship on Saturday, August 4th at the Links at Challedon in Mt. Airy, MD.  The Chesapeake section is composed of chapters from the District of Columbia, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware, Easter Shore, MD, Central PA, Fredericksburg, Southern MD, and Richmond. There were over 100 participants in the tournament.

Representing Richmond were:

Championship Flight - 0
First Flight - Marilyn Cole & Laura Posey
Laura Posey at Sectional

Second Flight - Ellen Moseley
Third Flight - Mary McLean & Kim Harding
Fourth Flight - Karron Small

Karron Small

Scramble Team - Mary Carpin, Linda Church, Deborah Dunham & Carrie Galeski

It was an unusually hot day, but with some breeze that helped keep us from wilting on the vine - teetered around 100 degrees. The first players went out around 8am, and we were playing the front and back nine, which helped play tremendously. Our scramble team went out at 8:20 am, and we were finished around 1:00pm - not bad, time wise!

As each player or team came in and signed their scorecards, we then went for lunch before the results were announced. Stephanie Jennings was there from EWGA Headquarters in Palm Beach, and Kathleen Matthews made the presentations.

We had two members from Richmond who placed.  Karron Small came in 3rd in the 4th Division, and our big winner of the day was Laura Posey, who placed low net in the First Division. Needless to say, Laura got a huge ovation from the Richmond members, and especially from her number one fan, Ellen Moseley!

Laura and Ellen

We are all soooooo very proud of Laura, and want to wish her the best of Luck in the EWGA Championship Finals being played September 7-8 in Nashville, TN at the Hermitage Golf Club. We'll all be rooting for you, Laura!

Solstice Survival Competition Winner in DC area from GREWGA Chapter - Chris Young

By

Carrie Galeski

Golf all day - sun up to sun down!  It's what we say we'd like to do, but when you actually get the chance, is it all you thought it would be?  More than 1,000 players from Maine to Virginia to Ohio got the chance to find out in the nationally renowned 54-hole Solstice Survival Tournament Series. The idea started in 1994 in DC, when on the longest day of the year a group of seven players played three rounds at three different courses, just for the sake of doing it!

At this year's event in the DC area, five courses were played. The participants arrived at the golf course to register at 4 am and play stared as soon as the sun rose.  It is non stop play from that point forward, with no breaks except for bathroom breaks. Meals are picked up as they play, and play continues for 54 holes!

This year,on June 18th at the Laurel Hill Golf Club, there were over 100 participants. The field was mostly men, but there were at least three foursomes of EWGA women from the Chesapeake section including two from the Greater Richmond Chapter. Deborah Dunham has participated for the past several years, and this year she convinced Christina Young to play with her.  It was a hot humid day with showers making it cart path only. Not the best conditions - especially for 54 holes!

When play was concluded, and the winners were announced EWGA ranked in the top five of the net division, with Christina Young taking first place net! Deborah also finished, and tied for 66th!Scramble

Congratulations to Chris for her win, and congratulations to Deborah for completing the Solstice for the fourth year in a row!!!!

ART, WINE, MUSIC and FUN!

The Membership and Social Committees of our local chapter are working together on an event that will be fun for us all and will hopefully bring in new members and raise money for our Girls Golf program.  It will be held from 7-9pm on Friday, October 19, at the CrossroadsArtGallery in the CrossroadsShopping Center off Staples Mill Road/Broad Street

On the third Friday of each month, CrossroadsArtGallery hosts a free evening with music, food, wine, juried art show, and a chance to meet and enjoy other art enthusiasts.  Each month they highlight one non-profit, allowing them to publicize their group and to raise money through "bartending" the wine table (all profits to our group).  Additionally, they will give 5% of all art sales that night to the Girls Golf Program that we support.  October is usually a good month for attendance (around 500 or more), so we need VOLUNTEERS in the following areas:

-        2 Greeters  - one from 7-8 & one from 8-9

-        "Minglers" (2 or 3 "OUTGOING PERSONALITIES" per hour)

-        Bartenders (2 per hour)

-        Bar ticket sellers/table workers (we need 2 per hour)

-        Early arrivals to set up (as many as possible)

-        Food Crew to set up food table and replenish as necessary (2-3 per hour)

-        "Late-stayers" to clean up

Please call Gail Thompson (339-1181) or email her at gthompson2@aol.com to volunteer.  Also, if you have a place (work, clubhouse, etc.) where you can put up a flyer to publicize this, let us know.  Thanks.

Be sure to mark your calendar for October 19, 7-9pm!

Tee Sign Program A Hit At Women's Open

Tee SignsEWGA at the 2007 U.S. Women's Open was again a great success both financially and for the EWGA spirit that it represented.  We are proud to say that we had 87 Chapters and 2 Sections participating in this year's Tee Sign Campaign which raised over $14,000!
Tee Sign 2
We want to express our sincere thanks to the Greater Richmond, VA Chapter for your participation in the 2007 EWGA at the U.S. Women's Open fundraising campaign to raise funds for the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf programs. We not only raised significant funds for this program but also received some great promotional coverage from a North Carolina TV station at the Friday golf tournament

Tee Signs 3
If you were able to attend this years EWGA golf event at the U.S. Women's Open, you know how amazing all of the tee signs looked on the course. For those not able to attend, we have included a few photos to show how the tee signs were displayed at the event as well as the signage that was prominently displayed at the Thursday night reception and at the golf course and luncheon on Friday.

Thank you again for your generous support of the EWGA Foundation's effort to raise funds to support the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf programs and we look forward to working with you again in next year's campaign.

GOLFGolf with the wife
A man staggers into an emergency room with a concussion, multiple bruises, two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor asks him what happened.
Well," said the man, "I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when on a difficult hole, we both sliced our balls into a cow pasture While we were looking for our balls, I noticed one of the cows had something in its rear end. I walked over and lifted the tail, and sure enough, there was a golf ball with my wife's monogram on it - stuck right in the middle of the cow's butt!"
That's when I made my big mistake."
"What did you do?" asks the doctor.
"Well, I was lifting the cow's tail and yelled to my wife, 'Hey, this looks like yours!' I don't remember much after that"!
